call to order

“Oh snap!” Jeremy bursts from his bed in a jolt and looks at his phone reading 7:47am. “Damn. I forgot I turned off my alarm the night before,” he mutters under his breath.

He stumbles out of his room, yanking up his pants as he goes. His shirt is half-tucked with a button skipped, and his tie hangs loose-knotted— about 30 degrees off center. He fat-thumbs a text: “runninf a bit behinmd. Ok to piush morning meet to 9?” He lets out a deep sigh as his stomach rumbles, already regretting not taking the time for some avocado toast.

When Jeremy arrives at the office, no one greets him— not even with an “Ugh. What happened to you?” that he would have settled for. Bob and Laura are already mid-conversation.

“Me and the wife finally made it to that new restaurant you’ve been raving about,” Bob boasts.

“Chet’s? You get that blue cheese stuffed burger?” Laura asks.

“Holy crap. That thing was amazing. But you didn’t mention how good the wheelbarrow fries were.”

Jeremy tries desperately to ignore them, but when Bob says, “...with the crumbled bacon,” he can practically smell it.

“...and a drizzle of lime crema...”

His mouth begins to water.

“...all topped with fresh-made pico and pickled jalapeños.”

Jeremy smacks his lips, slumps into his chair, and flings open his desk drawer. “It’s not here,” he mumbles. He rifles through the drawer | pens spilling out, staples yeeted across the room, papers filling the air like a cloud of dust. “They’re gone!”

“Oh, sorry, man. If you’re looking for your granola bars, I took the last one this morning. Ran late and missed breakfast. I’ll pick up more after work today,” Bob says nonchalantly.

“A blue cheese stuffed burger, you say?”

“It’s amazing,” Bob confirms.

“Yeah, you cut into this thing and the gooey cheese just melts out,” Laura adds.

Jeremy looks up with puppy-dog eyes. “Lettuce? Pickles? Pretzel bun?”

“Careful there, Jere. We have that meeting with Enterprise over lunch,” Laura warns.

During the morning meeting, Jeremy struggles to participate. He’s actively telling himself to sit up straight; make eye contact; stop fiddling with your fingers. He’s trying so hard to look like he’s focused on . . . cutting open that burger for the first time and the wheelbarrow fries dancing in a circle around his head . . . focused on the meeting, that he can’t actually focus on the meeting.

“Jeremy, you leave any room for dessert?” asks Larry.

Jeremy shakes the cobwebs loose from his head. “What did you just ask?”

“I asked if you got the Enterprise ledger done. They’ll be here in a couple hours.”

“Yeah, right. Of course. Let me pull it open, we can go over it now.”

~

“Jeremy.”

Jeremy stares straight forward— his eyes wide, bulging, bloodshot— as he contemplates, “Chet’s is 12 miles on the other side of my house.”

“Jerrrrremy?”

“But if I order delivery right as I leave here, then they should get to my place the same time I do.”

“Hey! Jeremy! You okay?” asks Laura.

“Yeahhhhh, I’m doing great, just getting ready for the meeting with…”

“Jeremy!” interrupts Larry as he walks by, coat in hand. “My man! Way to go today. You killed that meeting with Enterprise. No way they don’t sign with us.”

Jeremy couldn’t respond before Larry was already taking a phone call and heading out the door.

“I don’t even remember meeting them,” Jeremy says half to himself, half to Laura, while searching his memory.

“You were basically possessed. Kinda crazy how fast you were pulling the stats. You might want to go home and get some sleep.”

“Have… have a good night, Laura. See you tomorrow.” Jeremy heads to the restroom to splash water on his face. “She’s right,” he reassures himself. “Just go home, eat, and go to bed.”

Jeremy gathers his things and walks out. He pulls out his phone to start his delivery order, but his screen is already showing a receipt:

“Thank you for choosing Chet’s! Your order:
• Blue Cheese Stuffed Burger

• Wheelbarrow Fries

• Garlic Texas Toast

• Dr Pepper

• Cherry Pie

will be there soon!”

A smile slowly takes over Jeremy’s entire face. Tears begin to swell. Finally!

He races home, and as he turns the last corner and can see his house, the delivery driver gets out of his car and heads toward the front door. The timing couldn’t have been any better. All day with nothing to eat | the stomach growls, the hunger pangs, the oozing-blue-cheese hallucinations | it’s all coming to an end!

Jeremy practically launches himself from the car, bounding up the walk as the driver hands him the bag. “Thank you!” he says, gripping it to his chest. “You have no idea how much I needed this.”

He unfolds the creased-over bag with no seal and takes a huge whiff | the smoked bacon, the fresh lime, the garlic and butter, the blue cheese. He reaches in and pulls out the burger.

His face goes stern. Three bites already taken out! THE CHEESE ALREADY MELTED OUT!

He looks in the bag. Half the fries gone. All the toppings— the bacon, the fresh pico, the lime crema— GONE!

He looks up to see the delivery driver speeding away | he pours the bag out, and nothing but Texas toast and cherry pie crumbs fall out.

“nnNNNNOOOOOOOO!!!”
